I have read several DSLR books for dummies (such as myself). Most of them teach that the keys to great photography with a DSLR camera are composition, ISO, aperture, focus settings, shutter speed, histogram, etc. Not only do I need to know those technical parts, I need to learn how to take control of the camera and understand what all of the modes, dials, buttons, and settings are used for. I am also forcing myself to learn to see light, capturing the “moment” and angles of view, and how to get a proper exposure for the scene I am photographing. It also is amazing how different lenses can enhance images in different ways. Oh man, this is really tough!!
The first week of Nikon D3200 ownership led me to visit the same park again and again. I should be able to sharpen my skills in no time if I am given the chance to practice every day. Knowing that I’m a full time mom with a not-so-angelic toddler, being able to use my camera is definitely something that needs to be planned ahead.
When I’m outdoors, I do try to set my ISO to 100-200, and when I’m indoors, I try to go about ISO 800-1600. The problem with ISO sensitivity is, the higher the number, the grainier the picture will turn out to be. And I hate to use the flash mode because it whitens everything inappropriately, especially indoors.
Here are some of the pictures I have taken at Richmond Battlefield Park last week. Hopefully I get to practice more in the near future.
